I thought HW today was 09:50, so I set off @ 07:00 hoping to miss the worst
of the bank hol M5 grockels. It was not to be. Took me about 1 1/4 hrs
thanks to bloody 40mph roadworks between Cribbs & Avonmouth, followed by
hordes of incompetent motorists parking on all 3 lanes of the S-bound
M5.
So I wasn't in the best frame of mind when I arrived.
Good news was, I'd been looking at yesterday's tide times, so this
morning's tide was actually 10:40 rather than 09:50.
Was blowing more than the forecast F4-5, so rigged-up the trusty old 5.5m
on the 86l Goya. On the 1st run out, I was so stupidly overpowered, I
couldn't waterstart. Eventually, back on the beach - Applying several cms
more downhaul & outhaul suceeded in having no beneficial effect whatsoever.
Out with the 4.2m & 78l JP Wave.
Managed about 300yds out when that sinking feeling became all too apparent.
Again, couldn't waterstart for ages. This time due to too little wind.
Other sailors became despondent & packed-up. I went back to the 86l Goya
Wave & 5.5 and - lo & behold - after practically everyone had left, had a
great time for the best part of 2 hours. Retired well-worn about 13:00, as
the sea was starting to retreat over the horizon.
